Course Requirements

  1. Regular class attendance and active participation based on prior reading of assigned materials. More than one class and one conference absence will result in loss of credit, except in exceptional, documented circumstances.
  2. Each week you should post a discussion question to the web board – no later than Thursday, by 9 p.m. the night before the class. Please read each other’s questions and bring them to class with you. It is your responsibility to get your web password sorted out and learn to use the board (consult academic computing, if necessary).
  3. Occasionally, you will be asked to lead the class discussions in pairs. This will involve setting out discussion questions for us. While the primary responsibility for the discussion will rest with the assigned discussion leaders, the entire class is expected to actively participate.
  4. Thought pieces (1-2) pages for each week. These should try to summarize/synthesize the argument and only then lay out your response to and evaluation of the material assigned. These thought pieces will be collected at the end of each class.
  5. Three class papers will be assigned over the course of the semester. Topics will be provided in class and the papers will be due on Thursday of the following week, with the exception of the first class paper, which should be turned in on Friday, September 16. Hard copies only please. Papers submitted over the internet and late papers will not be accepted.
  6. A conference paper based on a topic of your choice (decided upon in discussion with me). Deadlines for this work are as follows:
