historical Note

When the College opened in 1928, the Dean of the College was called the Director of Education, a title held by Beatrice Doerschuk and Esther Raushenbush. In the early years of the College, Constance Warren (President, 1929-1945) felt strongly about not calling the Director of Education a Dean and so the title, Director of Education remained until 1949-50 during Esther Raushenbush’s term as Dean. This title change came as a result of Harold Taylor’s (President, 1945-1959) concern that the title caused confusion of people outside and inside the College regarding Esther Raushenbush’s duties and where she fit into the administration. In addition, Taylor felt the title of Dean of the College had “a nice authoritative ring to it and enables us to call her Dean Raushenbush on official occasions.”

The next change in the Dean’s office came in 1956 when the Management Survey Report suggested that an Assistant Dean be appointed to take over certain functions of the Dean. The student body had increased and with it, the Dean’s responsibilities increased. Therefore, an Assistant Dean seemed necessary. The position of Associate Dean was officially established in 1958. Associate Deans were:

Marjorie Montrose Christiansen, 1958-1967
Elizabeth Muckmaster, 1962-1964
Jane Dahlberg, 1968-1969
Barbara Kaplan, 1980-1985 (in addition to Dean of Studies responsibilities until 1982)

In 1970, following a nation-wide trend by colleges and universities to study the governance and structure of their schools, the Board of Trustees created the Trustee Committee on College Governance to update the structure of the administration and Board of Trustees. One of the changes made was in the Dean of the College’s responsibilities. The Committee proposed to make the Dean an ex officio member of the Board of Trustees, reflecting “the importance attaching to the Dean of the Faculty as the chief academic officer of the College.” The Dean of the College was officially “second in command” under the President. In order to reflect these changes, the Committee proposed changing the title of the Dean to the Provost and Dean of the Faculty.

Five years later, with another round of Trustee Bylaw amendments, the title was changed back to Dean of the College where it has remained since. In 1975, the Committee on Educational Planning again looked at the structure and governance of the administration of the College and decided to return to the title of Dean of the College, most likely to differentiate the responsibilities of the Dean of the College from the upcoming Dean of Graduate Studies position.

biographical notes

Anna Beatrice Doerschuk (1879-1974) received her A.B. in 1906 from Oberlin College and received graduate training at Columbia University. Prior to working at Sarah Lawrence, Doerschuk taught Latin and German at Oxford College and Kalamazoo Seminary, was Assistant Dean of Women at Oberlin College, Assistant Director of the Bureau of Vocational Information, and a researcher for the Welfare Council. Early on, the title of Director of Education was questionable. Originally, Marion Coats (President, 1928-1929) appointed Doerschuk to teach one course in Psychology and work as the Director of Education for 1928-29. When Constance Warren (President, 1929-1945) arrived, she felt strongly about not calling the Director of Education a Dean, but rather referred to the position as “Registrar.” Doerschuk was granted the title of Director of Education Emerita in 1962 by the Board of Trustees. She was at the College during its most formative years from the opening in 1928 through her retirement in June 1946. At her retirement, the College noted, “In the act of leaving, Miss Doerschuk reveals to us what we knew but did not sharply realize: the extent to which she and the College have become one.” Known for her “calm and her unhurried manner.” From 1926 through 1955, she served on the Board of Trustees of Oberlin College. Originally the Beatrice Doerschuk Library was housed in Westlands, but was later replaced by the Dean’s office. As a result, a separate reading room was named for Doerschuk in the Esther Raushenbush Library.

Esther Mohr Raushenbush (1898-1980) was appointed Director of Education in April 1945 to take office upon Beatrice Doerschuk’s retirement in June, 1946. Prior to holding this position, she was a member of the Sarah Lawrence literature faculty from 1935 to 1946. Raushenbush held her A.B. 1921 and M.A. 1922 from the University of Washington. Prior to coming to Sarah Lawrence she taught English at the University of Washington, Wellesley College, Barnard College, and Columbia University Graduate School. She held the position of Director of Education, later called the Dean of the College, until June 1957 at which point she returned to the literature faculty until 1962. Raushenbush’s influence on Sarah Lawrence was felt not only by her tenure as a literature faculty and Dean of the College, but also as founder and director of the Center for Continuing Education from 1962 to 1965. During one of those years, 1964-65, she again served as Acting Dean of the College. Eventually, in July, 1965, Raushenbush became President until 1969. She was granted the title of President Emerita in 1969. She once wrote of her time as Dean that “Being a Dean was a great addition to my life in spite of the administrative routines of the office. There I saw young teachers becoming good teachers in an atmosphere that gave them a chance for this to happen…” During her time as Dean, she was active in the development of the Graduate Studies Program and its program for training teachers.

Laura Bornholdt (dates unknown), appointed Dean of the College in 1957, came to Sarah Lawrence from her position at the American Association of University Women. Prior to that she taught history at Smith College, and was dean of women at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her B.A. 1940 and M.A. 1942 from Smith College and her Ph.D. in history in 1945 from Yale University. In his welcoming letter to Bornholdt, Harold Taylor (President, 1945-1959), he outlines the position of the Dean as follows: “I think of the Dean as a working partner with the President, responsible to the President, and in the language of the Trustee statement, ‘the primary administrator of educational policy in its day by day interpretation and realization in action.” The responsibilities of the Dean of the College became a rather formidable task by the time Bornholdt became dean. In fact, in a letter to Harold Taylor before accepting the position, Bornholdt wrote, “I confess, too, that I had the wistful thought while on the campus that Sarah Lawrence machinery was geared to give everyone…time for reflection and meditation except the Dean, whose paper work alone seemed formidable.” It was during her term as Dean, that the position of Associate Dean of the College was created. Marjorie Montrose Christiansen was the first person to hold this position. The responsibilities of the Associate Dean are outlined in Series III. in the folder “Associate Dean’s Responsibilities.” Bornholdt resigned from her position as Dean of the College as of June 1959.

Gerard Fountain (1916- ) served as Acting Dean, and then Dean of the College, for two years from 1959 to 1961. Prior to this position, he was Nursery School Adviser from 1952 to 1955 at which time he began teaching child development. From 1955 to 1959 he also served as consulting psychiatrist for the College. He received his A.B.1939 and M.D. 1943 degrees from Yale University. Since Harold Taylor resigned at the same time as Laura Bornholdt, Fountain’s appointment was originally for Acting Dean. Procedure dictates that the President appoints the Dean of the College with the Advisory Committee and the Board of Trustees. Therefore, Fountain was appointed as Acting Dean until a new President was elected. In fact, in June, 1961, Fountain’s title was retroactively changed to Dean of the College.

Marjorie Coogan Downing (Wagner) (1917-1997) succeeded Gerard Fountain as Dean of the College from 1961 through 1965. Downing received her B.A. (1938) from the College of Mount St. Vincent, her M.A. (1939) from the Catholic University of America and her Ph.D. (1942) from Yale University. Prior to her position at Sarah Lawrence College, she taught at Barnard College, Laval University and Brooklyn College. Even though her term as dean did not end until June 1965, Downing was on a leave of absence for her last year in the position from September 1964 to June 1965 at which time Esther Raushenbush was Acting Dean.

Jacquelyn Anderson Mattfeld (1925- ) was Dean of the College from 1965 through 1971. She attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music, received her B.A. (1948) from Goucher College and her Ph.D. (1959) from Yale University. Prior to Sarah Lawrence, Mattfeld served as Associate Dean at MIT and at Radcliffe College. Not only was she Dean of the College during her tenure, but she also taught music history. During her time at Sarah Lawrence, the position of Dean of the College went through a few more changes. The most significant was the title change from Dean of the College to Provost and Dean of Faculty which took place in 1970. After Sarah Lawrence, Mattfeld went on to become Dean at Brown University and later President of Barnard College.

Robert Wagner (1926-1999) was appointed Acting Dean of the Faculty from 1971 to 1972 and later became Dean of the College until 1977. Wagner received his A.B. (1945) from Lafayette College and his M.A. (1948) and Ph.D. (1952) from Columbia University. He came to the College in 1953 as a member of the literature faculty and did not retire from that position until 1999 at which point he was granted the status of faculty emeritus. While at Sarah Lawrence, he also served as Director of the Summer Session in Florence. Prior to Sarah Lawrence, Wagner taught English at both Hofstra College and Pennsylvania State College.

Alison Baker (1939- ) served as Dean of the College from July 1977 through May 1980 as well as teaching on the Asian Studies faculty. During her term as Dean, she began an exchange program for students from Japan as well as expanded the other international programs at the College. Prior to her positions at Sarah Lawrence, she taught and served on the administration of Boston University, Boston College and Newton College of the Sacred Heart. She received her B.A. (1962) from Bryn Mawr College and her Ph.D. (1974) from George Washington University.

Ilja Wachs, a member of the literature faculty since 1965, served also as Dean of the College from 1980 to 1985.

Barbara Kaplan served as Dean of the College from 1985 to 2007. Prior to holding this position Kaplan was Dean of Studies (1975-1980) and Associate Dean (1980-1985). While acting as Dean of Studies Kaplan also taught courses in literature. Prior to Sarah Lawrence she worked in the Department of English at SUNY Purchase, as co-director of the Upward Bound Program at Queens College, and as a lecturer and instructor at Queens College and Rutgers University, respectively. Kaplan earned a B.A. degree from Vassar College, a M.A. from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from New York University.

Pauline Watts was appointed Interim Dean of the College for a term of two years; 2007-2009. She earned a B.A. degree from Sarah Lawrence College and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.  Prior to becoming Dean of the College she served as a member of the European History faculty at the College (1985-2007).

Jerrilynn Dodds was appointed Dean of the College in 2009.  Before coming to Sarah Lawrence College she was a distinguished professor and senior faculty advisor to the provost for undergraduate education at the City College of New York, where she also served as chairman of the architecture department.  Jerrilynn Dodds has previously taught at the Graduate Center of the City of New York, MIT, Columbia, Harvard, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Minnesota.  She earned a B.A. degree from Barnard and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
