administrative history

The 1994-1995 Teachers Institutes for Sustainable Development was a two year project cosponsored by Sarah Lawrence College, the City of Yonkers, The Westchester Land Trust and the United Nations Environment Programme and supported by the Dwight D. Eisenhower Leadership Development Program grant under the U.S. Department of Education.

The 10-day Institutes were held August 15-26, 1994 and August 14-25, 1995, including three follow-up workshops.  In total thirty-six teachers and twelve Sarah Lawrence College students participated in the summer institutes.  The objective of the program was to teach middle school teachers from southern Westchester County urban public schools to more fully understand the relationships between critical ecological and economic issues, and to develop creative activities for middle school students so that capacity building might begin for the environmental leaders of the 21st century.

The programs were developed by a steering committee led by the Institute Co-Directors- Dr. Charlotte A. Price and Dr. Raymond D. Clarke- and the Institute Coordinator, Alice W. Bamberger.

Alice Bamberger a former high school biology teacher received her B.A. in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and her M.S. in Science Education from Iona College.  She was the coordinator of the 1994 and 1995 Teachers Institute for Sustainable Development.  Her role consisted of coordinating the recruitment of the participants and the college students, managing the budget, arranging follow-up workshops and preparing final reports.

For a complete history and detailed information of the Teachers Institute for Sustainable Development see the Institute’s Final Report.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of administrative documentation, as well as materials used for the 1994 and 1995 Teachers Institutes for Sustainable Development.  Some of the materials include general correspondence, press releases, newspaper clippings, meeting minutes, applications, reports, evaluations, handouts, notebooks, schedules, budget and additional funding information and speaker’s resumes and bios.  The collection is divided into two series:

  • Series I. Administration
  • Series II. Institutes

The folders that contain the meeting minutes in Series I also include other material relating to the meeting such as agendas, correspondence, articles, attendance lists, and notes.  In addition, the follow up correspondence in Series II are letters between Alice Bamberger, the Institute Coordinator, and some former Institute participants that continued working with Sustainable Development projects in their schools and/or their communities.  Some other folders contain copies of the agenda and schedules for the 1994 and 1995 Summer Institutes as well as copies of the faculty/speakers list.  All folders are arranged alphabetically.

All photographs were removed from the collection and housed with the photograph collection under Academic Programs and Services – Teachers Institute for Sustainable Development. Photocopies of the images were placed in the folders from which they were removed.

Restricted or Closed folders are marked as such in the finding aid and on the folder itself. Generally, folders are restricted due to correspondence with members of the public with which copyright does not reside with the College Archives. Photocopies are not allowed for this correspondence. Please ask the Archivist for further assistance with restricted folders.
