Alice Stone Ilchman became president of Sarah Lawrence College in 1981. Prior to her appointment as President, Dr. Ilchman served during the Carter Administration as Assistant Secretary for Education and Cultural Affairs in the Department of State and as Associate Director for Educational and Cultural Affairs in the United States Information Agency (1978-1981). Previous to her time in Washington D.C., Dr. Ilchman was Dean of the College at Wellesley College (1973-1978).
Alice Ilchman’s seventeen-year term (1981-1998) was longer than that of any other president of Sarah Lawrence College. Two major facility additions took place with the construction of a new science center in 1994, later dedicated as the Alice Stone Ilchman Science Center, and the Campbell Sports Center, the college’s first physical education and athletic center, in 1998.
Later in her term as president the Rockefeller Foundation elected Dr. Ilchman to its Board of Trustees in 1995 and she received a Fulbright Award for International Understanding in 1996. Dr. Ilchman retired in the summer of 1998. She had a long association with the Experiment in International Living (now World Learning), was a trustee of the Council on Economic Development, and served as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Alice Stone Ilchman died in 2006.
The majority of records in Dr. Ilchman’s papers date between 1980 and 1999. They consist of correspondence, inter-office memos, reports, speeches, admissions documents, conference materials, budgets, financial aid materials, and newspaper and periodical articles. The records are organized into five series:
Series I. Biographical Files
Series II. External Activities
Series III. Fundraising and Development Files
Series IV. Speeches and Writings
Series V. Subject Files and Correspondence
The collection also includes a few pre-1980 documents representing Dr. Ilchman’s work during the Carter Administration. These materials have been placed in the External Activities series. Other pre-1980 documents pertain to the administration of the College, such as amended governance and by-laws. These have been placed in the Subject Files and Correspondence (refer to Governance sub-series). Materials related to Dr. Ilchman's family, some of which predate her work at Sarah Lawrence College, were added to her Biographical Files.
A notable portion of this collection pertains to Fundraising and Development. The records detail Dr. Ilchman's role in increasing the endowment of the College and in creating new endowed faculty chairs such as the Joseph A. Campbell Chair in the Humanities. A significant fundraising effort was the Walrus Initiative, so named for a remark by Lewis Carroll, “the time has come, the Walrus said, to think of many things.” Planning materials, reports and meeting minutes describe this multi-year initiative that lasted from 1985-1992. The records also document Dr. Ilchman’s travel around the country to meet with alumnae/i and major donors and her personal relationships with them. During her final year as president, Dr. Ilchman traveled extensively to meet with alumnae/i and friends. The amount she raised in her last year of office was more than the endowment of the College in 1981, when she arrived on campus. Her efforts secured approximately 4.1 million in gifts to the College. Some of her thank-you letters and correspondence with “Associate” level contributors are included in the collection.
Also during Dr. Ilchman’s term, the College worked to develop a stronger admissions program. While the College saw a 47% increase in applications between 1987 and 1997, the acceptance rate dropped to 46%, the lowest rate in 20 years. This was a clear indication of the increased selectivity in the College’s admissions program. Her activities in re-evaluating admissions practices at Sarah Lawrence are highlighted in the sub-series of the same name in the Subject Files and Correspondence.
Dr. Ilchman’s papers reflect her active interest in all aspects of the College from its grounds to multi-million dollar grant applications. During her presidency, Dr. Ilchman regularly worked with contractors such as Sav-a-Tree to beautify the campus with trees and landscaping. Correspondence describing her concern for the campus as a whole can be found in the Subject Files and Correspondence.
Additionally, Dr. Ilchman worked to change City-University zoning laws. By seeking the advice of counsel, attending meetings and working continuously with the Yonkers Zoning Board between 1983 and 1987, Dr. Ilchman facilitated changes in the zoning laws that allowed for the expansion of the campus and the acquisition of housing for students.
Another key group of records is Dr. Ilchman’s Correspondence (filed in the series Subject Files and Correspondence). The files document Dr. Ilchman’s personal interest in faculty, staff, and students at the College.
Dr. Ilchman’s files also reflect her efforts to address racial diversity on campus. The Subject Files and Correspondence provide an account of her concern about complaints from students regarding important social issues and her understanding of the importance of each individual student at the College.
In addition to her regular duties as president of the College, Dr. Ilchman frequently discussed issues of education, women and the workplace and the importance of the liberal arts through speeches delivered on- and off-campus. These, along with her published writings, can be found in the Speeches and Writings series.
This series is organized into five sub-series:
Inauguration (1980-1982), Awards (1982-1998), General Biographical (1953-2006), Press Coverage (1981-1998) and Resignation (1997-1999).

Sub-series E. Resignation contains material related to Dr. Ilchman’s resignation in 1998. Included are announcements, press coverage, invitations and planning material for events related to her departure.
This series is organized alphabetically by organizational affiliation, and then chronologically. The files contain correspondence, meeting minutes, brochures, memoranda, reports, and research material pertaining to the organizations and charitable foundations with which Dr. Ilchman worked. The majority of her external activities involved work with policy- or education-related organizations, including The American Council on Education (1982-1993), Arts International (1981-1985), Council on Foreign Relations (1982-1993), Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (1982-1992), Economic Policy Council (1983-1986), The Institute of International Education (1981-1989), the National Research Council (1980-1988) and the Smithsonian Council (1981-1991). A few of Dr. Ilchman’s external affiliations counted her among their alumnae/i, such as the Experiment in International Living (1983-1990) and the Fulbright Program (1981-1991). Additionally, she served on the Board of the Rockefeller Foundation (1987-1993).

Sub-series D. Walrus Initiative holds brochures and newsletters about the “Walrus Campaign”, committee meeting minutes, strategic planning materials, solicitation lists, correspondence, and campaign literature. The files also include samples of marketing materials such as pledge cards and mailers. The Walrus Initiative was a large-scale fundraising effort that lasted from 1985 to 1992 and raised more than $15 million.
This series is arranged into two sub-series: Speeches and Writings.
Sub-series A. Speeches includes on-campus and off-campus speeches in one chronological run. All of Dr. Ilchman's on-campus speeches given during any one year were placed in the same folder, such as speeches given at the Convocation, Prospective Students Day, Parents Day, graduation and faculty meetings. Also in this chronological sequence are talks by Dr. Ilchman given at various non-SLC events such as high school and college graduations, awards dinners and ceremonies, and conferences. The folder labels consist of the title and date of the speech, the place or event, and the name of the sponsoring organization when the information is known. Dr. Ilchman’s speeches generally focus on matters of educational policy reform, women and work, and the importance of a liberal arts education.
Sub-series B. Writings includes an op-ed piece for the New York Times (1987), “letters to the editor” of Humanities, the New Yorker and the New York Times, and written testimony submitted to the House Sub-Committee on Post-Secondary Education (1982). Her articles often concerned women and the workplace, and the place of the liberal arts college in the spectrum of American society.
The Subject Files and Correspondence series consists of the majority of Dr. Ilchman's papers. The records have been organized into categories that reflect Dr. Ilchman’s management of the College. The 28 sub-series are organized alphabetically, and the information they contain are described below.
