Biographical Note
Charles Raymond DeCarlo was born on May 7, 1921 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to an Italian immigrant father and an Irish-American mother. Earning his B.S. in Engineering in 1943 from the University of Pittsburgh, he returned to his alma mater after a brief stint in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, to receive his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1951. He briefly taught mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh and at the American Studies Institute in Salzburg, Austria. DeCarlo joined IBM in 1951 and served in various executive capacities at IBM for eighteen years. Before arriving at Sarah Lawrence, he published numerous articles, some of which appear in this collection, on the application of information systems, management practices and social and cultural aspects of science and technology. He co-authored Education in Business and Industry with Ormsbee Robinson.
The Board of Trustees appointed DeCarlo president-elect in December 1968 and he was officially inaugurated as the College’s seventh president on November 19, 1969 at the age of 47. In his inauguration speech, DeCarlo described the two “impulses” which led him to accept the position. The first was his “concern for the effect science and technology have had, and will have, upon society” and the second was “the desire to work with young people, and to watch them as they deal with problems of shifting value systems in the society we have created.” He also stated one of his fundamental views on liberal arts education in his speech: “It is because I believe society has undergone radical revolution in the last fifty years that I believe the importance of a liberal education has risen to the highest priority, for how educators deal with this new membership in the society will help direct the future.”
DeCarlo brought many changes to Sarah Lawrence mostly within the financial organization of the College. He is credited with bringing modern budgeting practices to the College moving the College out of financial debt, reorganization of the administrative structure and rebuilding of the campus. During his tenure, the Performing Arts Center, Esther Raushenbush Library, new Science Laboratory and Slonim Woods complex were completed.
DeCarlo was outspoken on his views on education and, in particular, education at liberal arts colleges like Sarah Lawrence. He resisted the trend in the 1970s of liberal arts colleges becoming increasingly career-oriented. He was committed to keeping Sarah Lawrence a unique liberal arts college with a focus on individualized education as well as supporting the College’s “no-growth policy” of not increasing enrollment. He felt strongly that the increasing number of tenure faculty and the effect on the curriculum limited the flexibility of the curriculum. DeCarlo believed that professors should not remain specialists in one particular field, but be well verse in a variety of subjects. He favored a faculty development program where teachers would return to school for a couple of years to explore new subjects.
DeCarlo announced his resignation in February 1980, to become effective July 1981. He believed, at the time of his resignation, that “Sarah Lawrence College will be better served by new leadership, by a fresh approach to the challenges and opportunities of the 1980s.” One of his reasons for leaving was to “change careers.” His interests were in the role of science and technology in society and the role of higher education in preparing young people for effective and thoughtful policymaking positions. After his resignation he planned on “going back to where [he] left off, in the study of the philosophical grounding of technology and science.” Before leaving, he initiated plans for a capital campaign at the College, for which he participated in after resignation.
After Sarah Lawrence, DeCarlo worked as a technical consultant and started a small computer animation company with his son in New York. He has often been described as a Renaissance man for his interests in gourmet cooking, poetry, opera and modern technology.
He and his wife, Dorothy, had four children: Tessa, Rachel, Elisa, and Dean, three of whom attended Sarah Lawrence.
Charles DeCarlo died of cancer on November 24, 2004 at his home in Manhattan at the age of 83.
Scope and Content
The collection consists largely of the professional papers of Charles DeCarlo during his presidency at Sarah Lawrence College from 1969 to 1981. Some material relates to DeCarlo’s work with IBM and his personal life before and after his time at Sarah Lawrence. The bulk of the collection was received from the President’s office at Sarah Lawrence College in 1990 as part of accession 90-7. The papers represent DeCarlo’s official records and correspondence while in office. These include correspondence, reports, memoranda, speeches, articles, and meeting minutes. Some of the material dates back to Esther Raushenbush’s Presidency, but where files were continued to be used by President DeCarlo and his staff, they have remained in this collection. Files that were not continued to be used were removed and housed with the Esther Raushenbush Papers. These papers serve as the official records of the DeCarlo’s presidency at the College. The collection is divided into five series:
Series I. Biographical, 1968-1996
Series II. Speeches and Writings, 1961-1981
Series III. Fundraising, Development and Gifts, 1973-1981
Series IV. External Activities, 1967-1981
Series V. Subjects, 1952-1953, 1962-1981
All newspaper clippings and fragile, acidic, brittle paper were preservation photocopied and the originals discarded. The majority of folders are arranged chronologically from earliest to latest date. Some folders are arranged alphabetically and are marked as such in the folder title.
Restricted or Closed folders are marked as such in the finding aid and on the folder itself. Generally, folders are restricted due to correspondence with members of the public with which copyright does not reside with the College Archives. Photocopies are not allowed for this correspondence. Please ask the Archivist for further assistance with restricted folders.
