To provide access to original research papers and writings. Elfie Raymond and Pauline Watts currently do this. It's particularly useful for out of print or obscure items. Pauline has a wonderful Mappamundi gallery that sparks all kinds of ideas for uses by visual arts faculty.

Any occassion for integrating images and text can be naturally implemented on the web. I've used this feature of HTML a lot for my Perception classes. For example, I prepared an illustrated page on an area of my research expertise, stereopsis. Other pages that make use of the inline image feature of html are this quick and dirty collection of images available from other web sources to illustrate some of the pictorial depth cues we were reading about that week. A tool for integrating text and images, that incorporates hyperlinks to other web sources is ideal for lectures.
