Ambiguity of apparent motion

This is the simplect version of Ramachandran and Anstis's bistable competitive apparent motion stimulus. The horizontal and vertical distances between potentially corresponding dots in the two frames are equal. How do you see this motion?
Ramachandran and Anstis explicitly explore the effects of hysteresis or "motion entrainment" by embedding this bistable competitive motion stimulus within an unambiguous horizontal motion streaming.

Do you see two lines of horizontal motion streaming in opposite directions or the alternative (and more difficult) percept of two sideways U shaped motion curves? In other words do the dots seem to change direction when they reach the center of the stimulus?

Is it easier to see either of these configurations in the example below? Why?
