Creating a Site

Defining a Site in Dreamweaver

From the document window, select Site > New Site

When the dialog box appears, enter your information in the fields. To browse for the location of the folder you just created, click on the folder icon next to the"Local Root Folder" text field.

When you have filled in the local info as above, click on Web Server Info and select Server Access FTP from the pulldown menu of the left hand side. The dialog box below will appear:

Enter the information as shown and click "OK".

Do not save your password, or other individuals using the computer may be able to access your files.

When you are asked whether to create a cache file, select "no".

You have now established a link between your zip disk and your space on the SLC server.

Addendum after workshop of 6/12:

If it's the first time you are working on a site you need to set up a home site first. To do this Define a Site with this change in parameters from the instructions above:

This sets up a site for your top level in the web server — your home page.
From this site you can create a new folder by clicking on the public_html folder at the top of the Remote Site window and selecting File > New Folder. Give this new folder the name of the folder you have created for your new site on the Zip disk.

If you already have a home page then copy the contents of the public_html level of the web server onto your Zip as a back up of those pages. If you don't already have a home page we'll fill one in later.

On your own computer:

Thankfully you don't have to go through the rigmarole of setting up a new folder on the web server — once you do that from any computer then it's on the web server. You do need to define a site on each computer. Put your Zip disk into your own computer. Open up Dreamweaver and go to Define Site in the Site Window. Then follow the first set of instructions above — replicated on your handout.
