Inserting Symbols & Special Characters

To insert an accented character or symbol (like a bullet) you will need to open a program called Character Map. To open Character Map:

  • Click the Start button and select Run.

  • Type charmap and press the Enter key.

Find the symbol or character that you want to use, and click once to highlight it. Click the Select button, then the Copy button to put the symbol on your virtual clipboard. Use the Type Tool to click anywhere in a Photoshop document and then paste the symbol. After pasting, you can use the Type Tool to adjust the size and color of the symbol. The example below shows the location of the bullet character within the Symbol font.

If you don't see the symbol you need, try some of the other character maps by pulling down the Font menu and selecting the font of your choice. You can select accented characters from any of the standard fonts, like Times New Roman or Verdana. The Monotype Sorts and Wingdings fonts include some very nice characters that can be used as alternatives to plain bullets and the Webdings font includes many simple pictographs that can be incorporated into your Web site. For instance, you could annotate a hypersyllabus with icons made from the Webdings font as shown below.

Symbols from the character map can also be enlarged to form the basis of a Photoshop image where a simple graphic is needed. Enlarging a simple symbol like to 500 pt. can help you create something like this:

Once you have used the Type Tool to paste the symbol into your document, adjust the size of the symbol and then create new layers for text and color.
