Essay 2

Essay #1
Possible Topics
DUE Tuesday February 12th in class

Directions: Write a short but coherently argued essay that addresses one of the following topics. In form, your essay should be approximately 3-4 typed pages long (no more than 1000 words), with standard formatting (double spacing, 1 inch margins, 10 or 12 point font, page numbering) and a consistent citation procedure (I don't care which specific style you chose). In content, it should employ examples and illustrations from the class readings and discussions whenever possible to make your points. Your work will be evaluated on how well you demonstrate that you have thoughtfully engaged with the class materials and developed an understanding of the broader themes and/or issues that they raise.

  1. Discuss three specific historical scenarios in which photography was used in science: what do these have in common - and how do they differ? In your conclusion, be sure to indicate what such a comparative analysis reveals about the general relationship between cultural and scientific values, especially regarding the acceptance and dissemination of new technologies.

  2. In the catalog for an exhibition on Creativity in Art and Science, 1860-1960, art critic Edward B. Henning mused:

If the artist and scientist are successful, each emerges from the creative act with a form - a work of art or a scientific model or theory - that articulates in appropriate terms its creator's experience. Indeed, it provides knowledge that cannot be translated into logical verbal language but can only be obtained through the direct apperception of the work itself. (p. 10)
Using examples from the early history of photography, develop your own argument either FOR or AGAINST this claim. Conclude by reflecting on the implication of your argument for debates about the meaning of truth in art and in science.
