Evaluation of your work will be based on the following: 1. Participating in the seminar, including regular and timely class and conference attendance, as well as contributions to discussions. For one class session of the semester, I will ask that your contribution be more "formal:" to present your thought piece (see #3 below) first, as a framework for the class discussion. 2. Viewing required films. For some of the films you are required to watch for this class, we will have scheduled viewings. These, as well as the other required films, will be available on reserve at the SLC Library and/or at the CCE Library (honor system!) in VHS and (when possible) DVD formats. In general, students should pay careful attention to instructions in class and on the syllabus, and – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT -- allow for adequate time to get the films and watch them. We will begin class for which a film was required with a VERY brief (about 5 min or less) quiz, which (along with your participation in class) will help me determine whether and how carefully you viewed the film. 3. Writing a short 1-2 page thought piece on the readings (200-400 words) for each class (except on those days when you have class papers due!), plus two short 3-4 page (750-1000 word) class essays (choice of assigned topics TBA in seminar about two weeks before due dates) due October 8th (in class) and November 15th (Monday, by e-mail or in my office). 4. Completing a conference project by MONDAY DECEMBER 13th and doing an informal class presentation of this work at our last class. 5.
Turning in a class worksheet, due in my office by SOME IMPORTANT PROCEDURAL NOTES: CLASS and CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE: Attendance at all meetings is MANDATORY. THERE WILL BE NO RESCHEDULING OF MISSED CONFERENCES except in cases of medical/family emergency or (for non-emergencies) a full 24 hours notice. Simply put, I will respect your time -- and I ask you to please respect mine. WRITTEN WORK DEADLINES: Think of essay, conference draft, and final conference paper deadlines as indicators of what you can expect from me, as well as what I expect of you. If you do not provide me with sufficient time to read and think about your work, my ability to provide meaningful written feedback will suffer and consequently, so will your own educational experience.
