ESSAY #1
1. Using specific historical case studies to support your claims, discuss the relationship between the study of women and/or ideas of nature in science and the study of gender. How does an understanding of the gendered nature of early science inform our understanding of science as a methodological activity, practiced dominantly by men? In your conclusion, briefly reflect more broadly on the possible relevance of this historical discussion to more current issues (e.g. how to get girls interested in science, etc.).
2. Drawing on the readings, compare and contrast the life and work of any two individual scientists (note: you do not necessarily have to choose women!). Choose from the following historical periods: (I)16th-18th century; (II) the 20th century -- either two individuals within the same period, or one from each different period. How did gender issues inform each person’s knowledge making practices, as well as their personal life choices regarding learning and professional or social participation? In your conclusion, be sure to reflect more broadly on what your particular comparison suggests about similarities and differences within or between these periods.
