German Studies at Sarah Lawrence College

Intermediate German

Yearlong

This course stresses speaking, reading, writing, and a thorough review of the German grammar. Its aim is to give students more fluency and prepare them for their junior year in Germany. Although Sarah Lawrence College does not have its own program in German, students are encouraged to study in Germany through other excellent programs in Berlin or other German cities.

Readings will consist of short stories, poems, and three novellas by the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig; in the spring semester we will mainly use Im Spiegel der Literatur, a collection of short stories written by some of the most famous German writers such as Thomas Mann and Bertolt Brecht.

A solid grammar review, based on the book German Grammar in Review, will help students improve their speaking and writing skills. Regular conferences and weekly sessions with the German assistant Ms. Mizelle will supplement class work. Requirement: Beginning German at SLC (or another institution of higher learning) or at least four semesters of German in high school.

Current students: Go to MySLC for more information on the course.
