H-GIG
Produced by the History Dept. at the University of California Riverside, this site includes links to a wide range of indices and source material on research topics in three general categories: Medicine and Public Health, Science/Mathematics History, and Technology History.
WWW library - HSTM
The World Wide Web Virtual Library for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine was established in September 1994 , and it remains one of the most comprehensive sources of information (especially collective and individual biographies of scientists), research tools, and documents (including bibliographies, electronic texts and on-line exhibitions) in the field of science studies. There are also links to research institutions and professional organizations in the history of science.
JHU Resources
This list of Internet Resources for the History of Science is especially strong in 19th and 20th century biological topics (such as genetics and evolution) - but it also 19th and early 20th century technology.
Genetics/Biomedicine:
Grateful Med
Internet Grateful Med is the on-line version of Index Medicus, the National Library of Medicine's comprehensive periodical index. You can search the whole data base [MEDLINE] or focus your search on particular subject areas like BIOETHICS, AIDSLINE, or OLDMEDLINE [especially good for early 20th-century biological and genetic topics]. NOTE: SLC Library does not have a very large science journal collection, so many of the papers found through MEDLINE will have to be obtained on ILL. This is an excellent resource, but when you use it, you will need to plan ahead in the semester to see the fruits of your labors.
H. of Genetics/Davis
This UC-Davis-based site contains information on the early history of genetics (including text of classic papers in fly genetics) as well as links to MENDEL-WEB, a comprehensive educational site devoted to the legacy of Mendel's work (especially critiques and commentaries on his original paper).
CRG
Produced by the Council for Responsible Genetics in Cambridge, MA, this site features timely information on genetics policy issues, including legislative updates on cloning and genetic discrimination.
Genetics and Ethics Homepage
A comprehensive website on ethics and genetics. Collected together here are links grouped in such categories as "Genethics Literature," "Research Centres & Institutes," "Genethics Conferences," and "News & Bulletins." This site also has one further great feature: a page of "Careers in Bioethics," which lists Graduate Programs in Bioethics as well as Job Opportunities and PostDoctoral Fellowships.
Gene Letter
The Gene Letter is designed to raise the essential ethical and political questions about genetics research that we must ponder and to which we must respond. While it is written primarily for consumers and primary care providers, genetic researchers and professionals are invited to participate.
ELSI
Human Genome Project: Ethical, Legal, & Social Issues - Explores the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) surrounding availability of genetic information, as it pertains to privacy and the potential for discrimination.
NIR - Ethics and Genetics
National Information Resource on Ethics & Human Genetics - Compilation of links, journals and other publications that offer research about the ethical and moral aspects of applying genetic knowledge to humans.
Socio-Political Impact of Biotechnology in Developing Countries
Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development (NFSD) founded this site. It focuses primarily on food security issues in the developing countries who are struggling not to depend on surpluses or food aid from the industrialised countries.
