Adding a page and rearranging portlets on pages

Adding a Page

The 'Add a Page' option is located on the left-hand navigation bar and marked by a large green plus sign.

New pages are helpful when all the other pages are too crowded or disorganized; also, they allow for additional features and portlets.

The first page will prompt you to name the new page.

Editing/Customizing A Page

After adding a page, you will be taken to the customization area for the new page. This page is identical to the edit page for existing pages, which can be accessed by clicking the Edit Page button on the upper right of any page:

The first customizing option is the Properties of the page.

By checking the “Change URL” option, you can make the URL of the page match the title, though this will break any links to the old URL. By checking “Make this page default”, you can make the page the default page for the class, but generally you want to keep the Main Page as the default. Click Save when you are finished.

The second customizing option is the Content of the page.

This is where you can add portlets to the page. A custom content portlet works much like the syllabus portlet - you can enter any text or images.

You can pick and choose which portlets you want on the new page by checking the box next to the portlets you want. This will also give you the option of renaming the portlet – for example, if you want the “Bookmarks” portlet to be called “Links”, when you check the box next to “Bookmarks” the title of the portlet becomes a text box where you can fill in the desired title. Click Save when you are finished.

The third customizing option is the Layout.

Here, you can choose the number of columns you want the page to have between one, two, and three columns. Be aware that three-column pages are hectic and confusing; two-column pages are much easier to view.

You can also choose which portlet appears in which column. To move a portlet from one column to another, select the portlet and click on the image of the column you want it in. To reorder the portlets, select it and click the up or down arrow below the column to move it up or down. Click Save when you are finished.

The final customizing option is Permissions, where you choose who can view the new page in the top half of the screen.

Check the box next to the members of the course in the top half of the page who should be able to see the new page. Scroll down and click Save when you are finished.

For more information on Permissions, see this page.
