Podcasting Info Session Handout
Has the world of Podcasts run ahead of you? What are they? How can you find them? Why do you want them?
What is a Podcast?
Wikipedia defines a Podcast as: A Podcast is a series of electronic media files, such as audio or video, that are distributed periodically over the Internet by means of a Web feed. Podcasts are distinguished from other methods of distributing media because users can choose to subscribe to them, using software capable of reading feed syndication formats such as RSS or Atom, and thus can automatically receive new media files as they made available. A Podcast's content can often also be accessed by direct download or streaming.
Podcast files are not inherently different from any other media file, and can therefore be played back on any suitable platform such as other portable media players or personal computers. Like “radio”, the word “Podcast” can mean either the content itself, or the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also referred to as Podcasting. The host or author of a Podcast is often called a Podcaster.
What is RSS and how does it relate to Podcasting?
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) provides web feed updates for blogs, Podcasts, etc. It’s like a stock ticker on your computer for topics you want to know about.
How can I find Podcasts?
Let the search begin! They’re everywhere. iTunes, your favorite websites, academic institutions, news sites, music sites. The list, literally, goes on and on and on and grows daily.
How can I view Podcasts?
Simple. Use a web browser! A variety of sites will organize your feeds for you or use one of many free applications available online. Use one of many online tools: http://bloglines.com, http://google.com/reader, http://my.yahoo.com, http://feedreader.com, or use your phone (http://phonecasting.com or http://www.google.com/reader, etc!)
